According to industry sources, China-based TFT-LCD panel maker, BOE, plans to build its second 8.5G plant in Hefei, China. Currently, BOE has one 8.5G plant in Beijing. The sources said the BOE plans to use half of the 8.5G plant capacity for Oxide TFT and half for TFT LCD. The sources said that it is likely the government will grant permission for the new BOE 8.5G plant, and after the new 8.5G plant is built, it would help China to surpassed Japan to become the third largest panel-producing country globally. The sources added BOE's Hefei 8.5G plant has reportedly been planned as an AMOLED plant; however, AMOLED technology has yet to mature. The 8.5G plant will develop Oxide TFT and TFT LCD panels. As Oxide TFT technology matures, the firm is likely to begin production of AMOLED panels. BOE currently has more than 6,000 patents. The firm added 1,000 new patents in 2011 alone.
